One of the biggest misconceptions about Life Coaches that is out there is that we must have our sh*t together at all times and are living a stress free ‘perfect life’.
The question is does living in a way where everything is organised, expected and anticipated feel fulfilling? Does it make you feel alive?
Being alive, means feeling every emotion being fully present in every experience both good and bad.
Living your full life is challenging especially when we go through hardships. However it is those real authentic experiences that shapes us into the kind of human we are.
Living life outside your comfort zone as we call it, make you discover parts of yourself that you never knew existed, learn new skills, help you to grow, evolve and develop in ways that you never thought possible.
Coaching is a private space in which you have chance to examine your daily habits and patterns of behaviour that keep you trapped in an unhelpful mindset.
Often we get stuck in a mindset when something unexpected or terrible happens if life and we can quickly seat to feel like we have lost focus and control or lack direction. People often describe feeling passive that life is just something happening to them.
The good news is that your coach will talk to you about how you start to take back that control step-by-step. It will help you to get clear about what you are passionate about, what your values are and how you can begin to take actions that make you feel alive again. The truth is only you have control over your life and your own destiny.
What happens during coaching sessions?
Each coaching session is different and each Coachee has a different way of working with their coach. Along with the help of your coach you will find which areas of your life you want to focus on it could be you want to improve physical, emotional health, expand your creativity, improving yourself as a parent, building your self-confidence, or focusing on a personal goal that you have neglected for some time such as achieving a qualification or reaching out for a promotion, or a change of career, life direction.
You will focus on one area of your life at a time and everything you talk about will be broke down into small manageable easily measurable goals that you can work on from home in between seeing your coach. Your coaches role is to hold you accountable to the goals that you said that you personally want to work on. You can talk about anything you want in your sessions as they are completely confidential. Your coach will not recordsessions, other than brief notes on your goals.
If you get stuck you can email check in with your coach between sessions if there is something you need to clarify.
How we relate to the world around us changes how we behave in every relationship whether that is a personal, professional or romantic. This is why the coaching process is so successful because no matter what area of your life you choose to focus on in your sessions every area of your life will benefit.
You may talk about your relationships with other people during sessions however your coach will keep ringing you back to focus upon you and your goals because the coaching is entirely a process to benefit you. If during the process of coaching (or your consultation) it looks like you need more time to explore your interpersonal relationships your coach may suggest you consider other forms of self development such as counselling or therapy. Also if you bring up issues related to your health or well-being they may recommend that you see a medical professional. It is important to remember that the coaching process is there to benefit you and your personal growth.
Wby I chose to coach people.
Essentially I learnt about coaching because I have been on a lifelong journey of self development since being diagnosed with a mental illness and chronic illness at the age of 19. I spend ten years at University studying human development and became a qualified therapist working with children and their families. I worked in a very stressful highly pressurised role which took its toll upon my mental health.
I was shocked to discover when coaching training new tools that I could share with other adults who may have been through some of the hardships and difficulties I have.
In the past I used my own hardships and challenges as fuel to keep pushing myself forward in life. I wanted to prove something to myself and others. In the process I neglected my own needs, desires and aspirations.
Through consistently finding ways to keep motivated through times when others would give up, I realised how important it is to keep focus on what I really wanted and what was important to me in life. I asked myself am I really live in life on my terms or just doing what everybody else and society expects of me?
I began the process of self-coaching using the skills I had learned asking myself key questions so I could begin to get an idea what really mattered to me, what did I value and what did I want for my future.
I asked myself what kind of woman do I want to be? What do I want to hear other people saying about me when they describe me? What feelings do I want to feel every day? What will I be saying to myself when I look in the mirror every day? What does success look like for me?
It is five years later and I have learnt a lot during this process of personal change and development and a lot has changed significantly in my life in that time. More importantly I have had the pleasure of coaching over sixty people, both one to one , groups and through online coaching courses.
Why do I do it ? Put simply I want to share what worked for me with other people. And that I get a real buzzand a personal sense of satisfaction when I see people thriving it is really that simple.
